This day in history marks the beginning of an important settlement in what is now our country, the birth of a brutal dictator who murdered millions of his own people and began the Cold War, the disintegration and collapse of the Soviet Union that brought an end to that Cold War, and the emergence of the terrorist threat that now preoccupies our nation and most of the rest of the world.
