"From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more forever." [1877 - Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce Indians surrender to the U.S. Cavalry at Bear's Paw, Chinook, Montana]
[1947 - Harry Truman asks the American people via TV from the White House not to eat meat on Tuesdays, or poultry on Thursdays, to save grain for the starving in Europe]
[1953 - Earl Warren is sworn in as the 14th Supreme Court Chief Justice]
[1978 - Isaac Bashevis Singer wins Nobel Prize for literature]
The Occupy Wall Street phenomenon signaled a sea change in our country. It spread rapidly throughout the nation, and had all the earmarks of a grass roots movement that was yet to be hijacked by the power elite. The participants appeared dedicated to nonviolence mixed with some mild forms of civil disobedience to get media coverage. All this, while encouraging, was only a start. The danger with any revolution is not that it will fail, but that it will succeed in replacing the current structure with one that is worse. Only time will tell how this one will play out, but the smell of freedom was in the air and irresistible. The 'Arab Spring' may yet be followed by a USA Autumn. Autumn is a wonderful time of year.
